Inn RestorationThe McFarlin House sits on approximately 1.5+ acres of grounds. This Queen-Anne style, four-story home was built in 1895 by John McFarlin at the height of his career as a prominent tobacco farmer. In the early '40's Augustus Dickson Lester and his wife, Annie Alma Roberts Lester, purchased the home. They are responsible for installing the slate roof which ultimately saved the home from deterioration. This Historically Registered home was purchased in the spring of 1994 by Richard and Tina Fauble. With not only the moral support of Richard's parents and grandparents, but also their dedication to physical work, the three generations were able to restore the McFarlin House with a lot of pain staking labor, sweat and a lot of tears. As a child, Richard's parents purchased older homes in Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota and restored them. His grandparents were pioneer ministers in Michigan and were always moving from place to place building small community churches from the ground up. During these adolescent years, Richard gained priceless skills that came in quite handy for the McFarlin House project. The structure had been primarily vacant for almost 20 years and things really got worse before they got better. Complete photo albums are in the front parlor of this massive undertaking. (Anytime Tina gets depressed, Richard has her go look at the "before" pictures.) The restoration and modern additions have not sacrificed its nostalgic appeal, yet you'll enjoy all new bathrooms, new electrical systems, interior fire sprinkler system, emergency lighting, TV's, telephones, central heat and air and other modern amenities just as if they were within the home originally. Since opening in the spring of 1995, many more changes and upgrades have been completed. All guestrooms now have their own private bathrooms and some with Jacuzzi tubs. Despite our love of antique furnishings, antique double beds were just not comfortable for our guests, so now all rooms have either a queen or king size bed, with new mattresses, that just look old. Cable TV and private-line telephones are in every guestroom, VCR's, with a variety of movies are located in the Courtesy Room and can be taken back to your room for viewing. Complimentary soda, bottled water, tea, coffee, hot chocolate and snacks can be found in our Courtesy Room. Future plans are to restore the original carriage house into a private suite and add gardens, gazebos, picnic areas, paths, ponds and other enjoyable amenities to our back gardens. These projects too will be a labor of love and we invite you to come back to the McFarlin House and check on our progress.
